The Doniphan County Legion baseball team has earned Rainbow Communications Athlete(s) of the Month from Northeast Kansas for their performance through the month of June. The NEKL Legion team went 14-4 over the first stretch of their season in the end of May and June 2017.
The team, who is made up of high school players at Doniphan West and Troy, picked up big wins in the month of June including a sweep over Leavenworth twice, a sweep against Silver Lake, a sweep over Oskaloosa and two wins over Falls City. Doniphan also spilt with Sabetha, another top tier team in NEKL Legion Baseball. Doniphan saw big performances over the month from Brody Winder who had two clutch hits with 3 RBI against Leavenworth in 2-out situations to give them a 5-4 win back on June 13th. Winder was one of the top 2-1A pitchers this fall for Troy High School and will play at Kansas City (Kan.) Community College. Wil Smith, another Troy product, started off the month huge for Troy in a 9-1 win over Corning in which he went 3-3 for w/ a HR and 4 RBI. Smith also hit two grand slams and 9 RBI against Silver Lake over the month. Levi Watts, Bryson Kirkland, Chris Winkel, Clayton Ridout, Reid Greiser and Zeb Speer also had big months for Doniphan County.
Doniphan County, who plays in AA Legion, is 18-7 on the year and is currently playing in the AA Zone Tournament at Sabetha. They beat Corning last night 10-2 in six innings, led by Levi Watts who went 3-3 w/ 2 RBI.
