On Friday, host Girard girls won the Girard Optimist track meet by 60 points. Girard scored 133 points, well ahead of runner-up Chanute in the 13-team field. On the men’s side, Carthage (Mo.) won with 131.2 points, Chanute took second at 105.6 and Girard earned third with 91.
Notably, Girard’s Olivia Cullen won the shot put with an elite toss of 37-0.5. Chanute’s Rawley Chard had a standout time in the 400 dash in 49.46 seconds, and Girard’s Aiden Damman was just behind at 49.61. Cullen took the discus title in 104-5.
Chard and Damman’s 400 marks stand third and fifth respectively for all Kansas classes, per historian Carol Swenson’s statewide honor roll.
Gracie Peterson won the 200 title in 26.91. Serenia Short captured the 400 dash in 1:02.36. Haley Orender won the 3,200 in 13:21.09. Ainsley Norton took second in the 300 hurdles with 49.05 seconds. She won the pole vault at 8-6.
Girard captured both the 400 and 1,600 relays with 51.40 and 4:16.91 seconds. Peterson captured the long jump in 16-8.75. Kinley Smith was second in the triple jump with 33-8.5.
For the boys, Cormick Logue, one of Kansas’ best distance runners for all classes, won the 1,600 in 4:26.12 and the 3,200 with 9:43.72. The 1,600 is first in 3A. He ran 9:31.65 earlier this spring, which stands sixth best for all classes and first in 3A.
This season, Damman has posted 22.4 handtimed in the 200 dash, among the state’s best times.
