In 2019, Uniontown’s Danielle Howard was the Eagles’ lone state track qualifier for boys or girls. Then a freshman, Howard earned third place in the 300-meter hurdles in 47.18 seconds. The top-10 finishers all were non-seniors. Seven of the top-10 were freshmen or sophomores.

As well, Howard took seventh in the 100-meter dash, eighth in the 200-meter dash and tenth in the long jump. Howard posted 12.90 seconds in the 100, 27.14 in the 200 and 15 feet, 5.25 inches in the long jump.

Two years later, Howard is among the state’s best three-sport athletes – and has a strong case for 2A’s top girl athlete in 2020-21. Howard was second team all-league volleyball in 2019 and first team last fall. In basketball, Howard was a 2A Player of the Year finalist and averaged 19.8 points, 5.2 assists and five rebounds per game. The 5-foot-8 point guard set school records for single season field goal percentage and career steals.

This spring, Howard looks to become the Uniontown’s first track champion since 1999, per KSHSAA archives. Howard participates with Uniontown track and with Wheat State Elite basketball, which features many of Kansas’ top girl basketball players. Howard’s older sister, Alyssa, is a WSE coach, too.

Last Tuesday, a few days after she played basketball for Wheat State Elite, Howard helped Uniontown girls to a championship in the eight-team Pleasanton meet. The Eagle boys took third. Howard won the 100 title in 13.28 and collected the 300-hurdle crown in 47.2 hand-timed seconds. That is the equivalent of 47.61 seconds fully automatic time. On Sunday, Kansas historian Carol Swenson posted his new statewide honor roll to Sports in Kansas.

Howard’s 47.61 is easily the best 300 hurdle time in 2A. No other 2A girl is better than 48.63 seconds, per Swenson.

As well, Brooklyn Dreisbach won the 100 hurdles in 19.12 seconds and took third in the 300 hurdles in 52.51 seconds. The 400 relay earned first in 55.36 seconds. Howard helped the relay set a personal record. Paige Mason cleared 4-9 to capture the high jump, and Dreisbach finished second.

Senior Sammie Hampton, who was a key basketball player, swept all three throwing events. Hampton posted 98-10 in the discus, 88-9 in the javelin and 31-10.5 in the shot put.

On the boys’ side, Brycen Stewart ran 5:22.76 in the 1,600 to take second. Stewart ran 51.13 seconds in the 300-meter hurdles for first place.
