Two years ago, Frontenac boys scored seven points at Class 3A state track. During the regular season, the Raiders tallied 56.5 points and earned fourth at their home competition.

Three Raiders competed in the 2019 state track meet – and returned this spring after the COVID-19 pause of last year. Easton King qualified for state in four events. He was 14th in the 300 hurdles in 43.13. King ran on the 400-, 1,600- and 3,200-meter relays. The 400 took seventh, the 1,600 earned eighth and the 3,200 finished 15th.

As well, Ty Gates finished 12th in the high jump and was on the 400 relay. Brady Stanley was on the 400 and 1,600 relay. King and Gates are seniors, and Stanley is a junior.

This spring, those veterans have helped Frontenac to a strong start, especially in the relays and high jump. Gates is on the statewide leaderboard in high jump with a 6-foot-2 clearance, per Kansas historian Carol Swenson.

Host Frontenac captured the boys’ side of the Raider Invitational last Thursday. Frontenac captured the 10-team competition with 90 points. Galena was second with 83.75 points, and Labette County third at 75.75. Girard took fourth at 65, and St. Marys Colgan was fifth at 64.5. The girls took sixth.

Frontenac especially posted solid relays. The Raiders captured the 400 relay in 45.34 seconds. Frontenac won the 1,600 relay in 3:45.60. The Raiders also took second in the 3,200 relay in 9:42.

Gates finished second in the 100-meter dash in 12.24 seconds. Stanley was second in the 400-meter dash in 53.64 seconds. Junior Coy Medlin took third in the 800 at 2:19.30. Freshman Tallon Bonine was second in the 1,600 run at 5:23.10. King finished third in the 300 hurdles in 45.54.

The 1,600 relay featured Stanley, King, Owen Zafuta and Ryan Hite. The 400 relay had Gates, King, Stanley and Jacob Holt.

Gates cleared 6-0 in the high jump to take second. Senior Gustavo Herrera earned first in the discus at 113-6.

Frontenac posted well at the season-opening Galena Bulldog Relays on April 1. The Raiders took third with 56 points. Girard, known for its outstanding long distance, won with 159. Riverton was second with 66. For the girls, Girard was at 140, while Riverton earned second at 64.

Gates earned third in the 100 in 12.01 seconds. Frontenac, with the same quartet as the Raider Invitational, finished second in the 400 relay with 45.91. Gates cleared 6-2 in the high jump and finished fourth.

The 1,600 relay earned second in 3:49.93. King took runner-up in the 300 hurdles with a mark of 44.52. Herrera earned fifth in the discus at 104-9.
