What has this entire cancellation of season been like for you?
It has really devastated our athletes. Our numbers increased a little from last year and we had a lot of goals for this upcoming season. We had a great group of seniors and after 2 weeks of practice things were going really well.
What were some key things you were really looking forward to in the 2020 season?
We had a couple of athletes returning that had qualified for the state meet last year and were looking forward to qualifying again. We had an injury last year at regionals to a possible state champion returning and our relays could have been really strong. With more athletes out several of them would have stepped up and that’s always exciting to see.
Who are some of those key players we should have looked out for this year?
Isaiah Armstrong - Sprinter (who has signed with Wichita State)
Zephyn Mason - Sprinter/Jumper (qualified in Long Jump last year)
Alex Franco/Erik Almaraz/Derek Mesa/Braxton Sizemore (good group of distance runners)
Johnny Lozano - Hurdler/Mid Distance
Edgar Ramirez - Sprinter/Pole Vaulter
Nicole Ruda - Thrower (qualified in Javelin last year)
Teryn Teeter - Thrower
Madi Ruda/Darian Mader - Sprinters/Jumpers
What now ?
We are happy that some of our seniors will compete at the next level in college. For the rest of the seniors they know that they will be a part of Holcomb forever and that they were a part of history that changed our world. And how they have handled this has been amazing.
As a teacher what has this been like with school?
No students in the building have been unheard of. Doing lessons on Google Classroom and Zoom has been a big adjustment for many. As teacher’s our world was about the relationships with our students and now the relationship has moved to where it is no longer person to person. To be honest, it’s very depressing not being able to interact with the student/athlete. On the other side of it, our Students, Administration, Teachers, Staff, Parents, Businesses, and Community has done an amazing job of adjusting.
Anything else to add?
Prayers to God and we hope everyone can find peace of mind in this time of hardship.
