The Northeast Kansas Athlete of the Month from Rainbow Communications is Sabetha senior Joseph Gruber who just helped lead his baseball team to back-to-back 3A state titles last month.
Gruber, who is 6-foot-0, 200-pounds, was a unanimous first team Big 7 All-League short stop and also a KABC First Team All-State pick along with the KABC 3A Player of the Year. He is also expected to contend for the same type of honors from Sports in Kansas this coming weekend. Gruber who was also standout all-state football player will be playing baseball next season at Northwest Missouri State. He had 41 hits over 25 games this season with 11 doubles, two homers and a triple to go along with 20 RBI. He hit .519 over his senior season for head coach Aaron Frey and the Bluejays. He was also 5-0 on the mound in 36.2 innings pitched with 51 strikeouts. As an overall player as a hitter, pitcher and defender, Gruber was one of the most complete in all classes of Kansas for 2019.
Rainbow Communications would like to congratulate Gruber and the Bluejays on their back-to-back state titles. Sabetha has become quite the title town as of recent with back-to-back in 3A baseball, golf and football.
