Colby in control of 3-2-1A field

Colby has been a consistent Class 4A wrestling power with titles in ’01, ’09 and ’16. Last year, the Eagles took seventh in 3-2-1A. This year, Colby has just one returning state placer that qualified for 2019 state, but the Eagles have shown significant improvement at multiple weights. The Eagles qualified eight wrestlers, the most in the 3-2-1A field held at Fort Hays State University’s Gross Memorial Coliseum.

While some of the 3-2-1A top-10 team rankings underwent some changes this week, Colby and Eureka remained 1-2. Last year, Eureka was eighth. No eastern Kansas squad has captured 3-2-1A state since 2001.

The classification features seven undefeated wrestlers and two with one loss that among the best in Kansas for any class. Riley County senior Luke Richard stands 39-0 at 145, and his teammate, Mikey Waggoner, is 31-0 at 170. Ell-Saline senior Nick Davenport is 36-0 at 220, and Mankato-Rock Hills’ 152-pounder Zane Colson is 35-0 at 152.

The 285-pound weight class features a rare two perfect wrestlers with Sabetha senior Elliott Strahm (29-0) and Lakin junior Hadley Panzer (35-0). Last year, Strahm defeated Panzer in sudden victory in the semifinals en route to the championship. This year, the two are on track to meet in the semifinals again in one of more highly anticipated bouts of any class.

Like many of 3-2-1A elites, Strahm and Panzer are both all-state football players, and Strahm, a two-time 3A Defensive Player of the Year, accepted a Kansas State football PWO offer this week.

Minneapolis 182-pounder Tyson Villalpando is 29-0. Additionally, Hoxie senior Dayton Porsch has three state titles and is 37-1, and Hoisington junior Wyatt Pedigo is 35-1.

220 also has a shot to be very good with Davenport, Hayden Wiltfong of Norton and Cauy Rokey of Sabetha. Additionally Branum of Colby is in the field at 21-4, Charlie Nordquist of Marion at 22-9, Dane Whalen of Osage City at 28-4 and Creighton Johnson of Beloit at 31-8.

195 with Pedigo, Kody Davoren of Rossville (35-4), Boii of Colby (36-6) and Zach Dressler of Douglass (31-3) also has some big talent. Addtionally Ryan Junkermeier of Plainville and Dagen Goodner of Humboldt, both solid football players in the field as well and both playing in the Kansas Shrine Bowl for 2019.

285 with Strahm and Panzer as mentioned will be outstanding but it also has David Watts of Humboldt (27-4) and Eyann Zimmerman of Republic County (36-4). Both were regional champs. Watts has never wrestled until this year in high school.

Eureka’s twin brothers Kendall and Kolby Beitz at 113 and 120, respectively, are 33-1 and 27-2, respectively. Both have at least one state title. Eureka won its first regional crown since 2006. Last year, Kendall finished 44-0 with a title at 106, and Kolby was 34-2 at 113.

Voss, Booi leads Colby

Every Colby wrestler has at least four losses, but the Eagles took a bulk of their defeats at the prestigious Garden City tournament that few 3-2-1A teams attend.

For the Eagles, freshman Tyler Voss (36-7) is the top-ranked wrestler at 106. He and Rossville junior Zach Archer have consistently been the top-two in the rankings. At 138, senior Kurt Schroeder (31-7) picked up a regional championship and is fourth.

Colby’s strength comes at the upper four weights, though. Senior Kory Finley (35-11) is a retuning state placer and ranked third at 182. Sophomore Hagan Booi (36-6) enjoyed a dominant season that included a regional crown at 195. He is ranked second behind Pedigo.

Senior Tucker Branum (21-4) is fourth at 220. Sophomore Declan Ryan (30-13) also qualified at 285, along with freshman Aiden Cook (28-14) qualified at 120, and junior Cade Lanning (21-18) got through at 152.

Eureka qualifies seven

The Beitzs paced a strong Eureka team at the regional. Sophomore Connor Booth-Hughes (24-13) qualified at 106, while sophomores Brennan Lowe (34-4) and Bent Escareno (37-4) got through at 138 and 152. Both are ranked third.

Freshman Garrison Spoonts (29-9) qualified at 160, along with senior Jonathan Turner (27-14) at 285. At state last year, Lowe went 2-2, Escareno finished 1-2, and Turner went 1-2.

Hoxie with four qualifiers, four regional champions

The Indians have four wrestlers, all regional champions. Freshman Drew Bell (32-5) won at 120 pounds, while Dylan Weimer went 32-6 with a crown at 132.

Sophomore Aidan Baalman captured the title at 145 and moved to 32-10. Bell continued to be ranked second at 120. Weimer remained sixth at 132. Baalman went from unranked to fourth.

Porsch, a University of Northern Iowa commit, is 37-1 with two losses in his high school career.

Horn with big jump in rankings

Riverside junior Beau Horn had the biggest jump in the 3-2-1A rankings this past week. At 132, he went from fifth to first and is 31-5. Horn defeated Wellsville senior Ethan Ewing, 4-2, in the finals. Ewing had been No. 1 and dropped to second.

Additionally, the 126 and 138 weight classes flipped its top-two in the rankings. At 126 Hill City’s Alec Segarra defeated Oberlin’s Drew Juenemann, while Minneapolis’ Tristan Hauck beat Smith Center’s Jaden Atwood.
