Class 5A: Goddard remains in full control; looks for fifth straight crown after multiple regional upsets

Like 6A, the west regional was significantly more challenging than the east. The west, held at Arkansas City, featured the top-three teams with Goddard, Arkansas City and Maize. As well, Great Bend was ranked seventh followed by Newton and Salina Central.

This week, the top-10 rankings remained the same except No. 8 Newton and No. 9 Lansing flip-flopped spots from last week.

The West regional had 53 ranked wrestlers in the field, while the East had 31.

The final standings mirrored the rankings. Goddard was first at 255.5, AC took second at 220, Maize was third at 163.5, Great Bend fourth at 139.5, Newton fifth with 118 and Salina Central had 104.5 points.

The Lions have won the last four 5A titles, while Arkansas City is the defending 4A titlist before it moved up a classification this season. Last year, Goddard had 250.5 points and doubled up second place Valley Center (125). Maize was third at 119.

Goddard, which faces a brutal schedule that includes a large Oklahoma tournament and the prestigious Kansas competitions in Newton and Garden City, has no undefeated wrestlers. Every Lion has at least three losses.

Overall, Class 5A has three perfect wrestlers: Maize 145-pound junior Devin Gomez (46-0), K.C. Turner senior 195-pounder Cameron Bates (42-0) and Newton senior Wyatt Hendrickson (33-0), still ranked third nationally at 220 pounds.

Additionally, St. James Academy junior Cade Lautt has also been ranked nationally with just two losses, against a Missouri wrestler and Hendrickson at the Garden City tournament, and stands at 45-2.

The Lions have faced more resistance this year but are still the heavy favorites – especially after multiple upsets. Jason Henschel and Troy Fisher are both defending state champions. Henschel (28-4) won the title at 113 with three wins, including a fall by 61 seconds in the championship. He remains the top favorite at 113.

Arkansas City and Bonner Springs each led with 13 qualifiers, while Goddard had 12.

Goddard’s Glover with two upsets, beats Newton’s Treaster

Senior Lucas Glover (30-13) captured the title at 120 versus Newton’s Grant Treaster. Entering regionals, Arkansas City sophomore Kael Pappan was ranked first, Treaster was second and Glover was third. However, Glover beat them both and is the state favorite.

This week, he is first, followed by Pappan and Treaster.

He defeated three ranked wrestlers. After a bye, he beat Salina Central’s Elix Hernandez by fall in 3:22. Hernandez is ranked sixth. Then, he defeated Pappan, 6-2, and held off Treaster, 9-3. Hernandez is 27-5, Pappan stands at 34-10, and Treaster is 25-4.

Goddard’s Fishers continues to shine

At 126, Goddard freshman Jerrdon Fisher (38-7) was not ranked first until after Christmas. Now, he is the only freshman ranked No. 1 at any non-106-pound weight class. He went 4-0 with wins in all four ways: a fall in 4:29, a 12-0 major decision, a technical fall victory and a 3-0 victory versus Salina Central’s Drew Burgoon.

Burgoon has been ranked third and had not lost this year. He dropped to 35-1 and moved to second this week.

At 138, Goddard sophomore Jace Fisher was ranked third, but defeated Great Bend’s George Weber in the championship. Fisher is 29-8, and Weber stands at 40-2.

Weber was ranked second, but Fisher earned a 3-2 decision. As well, Fisher defeated fifth-ranked Trig Tennant of Arkansas City, 4-1, in the semifinals. This week, Fisher and Weber flip-flopped places.

Cayleb Atkins (35-8) and Nolan Craine (41-7) took second at 145 and 152, respectively. In the semifinals, Atkins beat Great Bend’s Gage Fritz, 6-0. Atkins was ranked sixth, and Fritz was ranked third. This week, Atkins is fourth and Fritz is fifth.

Goddard’s Dopps with big UTB win against Radke

In a high-profile matchup, Goddard’s Trevor Dopps and McPherson’s Scott Radke met in the 160-pound championship. Dopps won by ultimate tiebreaker and moved to 38-7, while Radke moved to 36-2. Dopps is the only wrestler to defeat Hoxie’s Dayton Porsch in the last three years after a win at the Garden City tournament in January.

They remained 1-2 in the poll and are the favorites to meet again in the championship.

At 170, Troy Fisher (25-3) is the heavy favorite to win 5A after a bye, falls in 2:56 and 1:51 and an 11-3 major decision victory. As well, Cayden Atkins (34-10) took second at 182. He is ranked second behind Maize sophomore Kyle Haas.

Arkansas City’s Jevin Foust holds on at 106

AC freshman Jevin Foust, ranked No. 1 in the classification, held on to win the regional title at 106. He had a bye, a fall in 5:35, an 11-9 sudden victory in the semifinals and a 4-3 victory against Kapaun freshman Bubba Wright in the championship. They continue to be 1-2 in the rankings.

After the loss, Pappan (34-10) took third at 120, Gabe Buckbee (23-4) took second at 132, and Tennant earned third at 138.

At 152, Montez Robinson, ranked No. 1 in the class, rolled with falls in 23 seconds and 15 seconds, a 16-4 major decision and a 3-1 win versus Goddard’s Nolan Craine. Robinson moved to 39-5.

Maize’s elite talent leads to victories

Maize heavily relies on its three No. 1-ranked wrestlers: senior 132-pounder Aidan Campbell, junior 145-pounder Devin Gomez and sophomore 182-pounder Kyle Haas. All three won titles.

Campbell (40-2) had a decision, a fall and a tiebreaker. Gomez (46-0) had three wins by fall and a 3-2 championship match. At 182, Haas (40-1) dominated with falls in 1:31, 48 seconds and 1:16 and a 10-3 decision in the finals.

SC’s Peters, Newton’s Hendrickson and WNW’s Hicks with regional titles

At 195, Salina Central’s Taylon Peters held off Bishop Carroll’s Brady Bockover, 3-2, in the championship. Peters is 32-2 and ranked first, and Bockover is 34-3.

Newton’s Wyatt Hendrickson, ranked third nationally, moved to 33-0 with a technical fall win against Northwest’s Josh Carter in the finals.

At 285, Northwest’s Marcus Hicks (32-1) won the title in a 1-2 ranked matchup against Valley Center’s Tony Caldwell, 7-3, in the finals. Caldwell moved to 33-5. Peters, Hendrickson and Hicks are again ranked No. 1 at their respective weight classes.

Host Bonner Springs wins 5A East regional

Bonner Springs won its own regional with 250 points, 30 ahead of Blue Valley Southwest and 37 in front of St. Thomas Aquinas. Bonner is ranked fifth in 5A, while Blue Valley Southwest is fourth. Aquinas is sixth in the rankings.

However, a big upset occurred at 113. Bonner’s Cassius Vanderpool was ranked second, while Blue Valley Southwest’s Brett Umentum is fourth. Umentum (37-9) defeated Vanderpool (32-7) with a 5-3 decision. This week, Umentum moved to second, and Vanderpool is third.

At 120, Cruz Lara (29-8) captured the title with a 12-3 win in the finals. Joe Tapia (34-8) and Jose Lopez (23-10) earned runner-ups at 152 and 160, along with Caleb Willis (32-4) at 220 and Derek Duffett at 106.

BVSW with regional titlists; Madden wins 1/2 match; McCall with upset

Blue Valley Southwest freshman Hayden Mills is ranked second at 106 and moved to 33-6 with a win against Bonner Springs’ Duffett. Mills was ranked second and Duffett third. Mills earned a 7-3 victory versus the 31-9 Duffett.

At 138, Brandon Madden (37-4) beat St. Thomas Aqunas’ Johnny Akin (41-8) in a 6-5 finals match. Last week, Madden was ranked first, Akin second. This week, Madden was first and Akin is fourth.

At 160, Jackson McCall (30-12) earned the title with a 2-1 upset in the finals against Bonner Springs’ Jose Lopez (23-10). McCall also won his semifinal match in sudden victory. He went from unranked to fourth, and Lopez dropped a spot to fifth.

McCall was seeded fifth and his plus-four seed/place difference was the best among all champions.

At 170, fourth-ranked junior Seth Nitzel moved to 35-7 with the title against Highland Park’s Kenny Hartzell by sudden victory.

Aquinas with regional champions; Simma and Gomez at the top at 145; Hancock and Robinson lead at 152

At 132, Bret Minor (27-2) took the title with a 1-0 victory against Blue Valley Southwest’s Daniel McMullen. Minor is ranked third. At 145, Aquinas sophomore Jared Simma (49-1, No. 2 ranking) won the title and could have a state finals matchup versus Maize’s Devin Gomez.

Simma had three wins by fall and a 4-3 tiebreaker in the finals.

At 152, Joseph Hancock (39-4) captured the title. He is ranked second behind Arkansas City’s Montez Robinson. At 285, Peyton Reeves (46-3) is ranked third and won the title with four strong wins: a 28-second fall, a 6-1 decision and falls in 1:23 and 1:49.

Turner stays perfect; could see Salina Central’s Peters

Kansas City-Turner senior Cameron Bates is ranked second with a 42-0 record, behind Salina Central’s Taylon Peters. Bates had a 10-0 major decision in the regional championship and could face Peters at state.
