The St. Mary's Colgan Panthers have earned the Craw-Kan "Your Community Technology Partner" Team of the Week from the Southeast Kansas area for their 25-18 victory over Centralia in the 2-1A football playoff quarterfinals.
After trailing 18-17 late in the fourth quarter with less than one minute remaining, quarterback Bryce Hutchins scored with 31-seconds in the fourth quarter on a one-yard run to put the Panthers up 25-18 to send the Panthers ino the semifinals for the second consecutive year. Leading up to that the Panthers had three consecutive incomplete passes but a fourth down pass interference gave them new life, then Hutchins scrambled 33 yards down to the one yard line before he would score on a one-yard keeper. Other scores in the game were the opening kickoff returned for 85-yards by senior Max Wilson. A field goal by Luke Orender and a 20 yard touchdown pass to Jeremiah Buche from Hutchins. Matthew Lomshek also had an interception for the Panthers.
First year head coach Shawn Seematter has done an oustanding job since taking over for Kansas coaching legend, Chuck Smith, who retired after 37 years at SMC last December. The Panthers are 9-2 on the year and will face Olpe in the state semifinals (sub-state) this Friday at home. A win for the Panthers would put them into the state football championship game in 2-1A at Hays for the first time since 2010.
