The Nex-Tech Wireless Western Kansas Athlete of the Month for their performance over the month of September is Thomas More Prep senior quarterback David McFarland.
The Monarch senior set the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame single game passing record for yards in a game with 648 yards in week one of the season back on September 1st. The previous record of 627 passing yards in a game was held by Zach Howell of Sunrise Christian Academy (Bel Aire, KS) in a 2011 contest against St. Mary's.
Not only did he have 648 yards he also had four touchdown passes. The upset bid of Abilene came up short for TMP as they fell 32-27 but they made a serious comeback to make it a ballgame. Abilene had led 20-0 early in the 2Q. McFarland completed 41 of his 63 passes in the opener.
In five games this season McFarland leads the entire state of Kansas in passing yardage with 1,719 yards. McFarland has also tossed 12 touchdowns in the five weeks. His favorite receiver has been Creighton Renz who has 37 receptions for 550 yards and three touchdowns.
TMP, led by head coach Jason Cauley, is just 1-4 on the season but have shown some good flashes in close games this season. They will look to get back on the winning track of things this week as they host Oakley. The Monarchs play in one of the best 2A/3A leagues in Kansas, the Mid-Continent League.
Thanks to the student photographers at TMP for providing photos of McFarland
