Pittsburg High School junior runner McKenzie Wilks has been named the Labette Bank Athlete of the Month for her performances over the month of May from the Southeast Kansas coverage area.

Wilks, a mid-distance/distance runner for the Purple Dragons, captured two individual state titles on May 27th at the state track and field championships in Wichita. The junior won the 1600 meters and 800 meters in Class 5A. Wilks has three individual state titles in her career as she added another one two years ago as a freshman in the 800 meters. Wilks won the 800 this season at state with a time of 2:19.37 and the 1600 with a time of 5:13.44 and was one of the top runners in the entire state of Kansas this season, regardless of classification.

Wilks is building quite the high school resume with one season remaining despite being in the shadows of fellow Southeast Kansas area star, Cailie Logue, a recent Girard graduate, who went down as arguably the best mid-distance/distance runner of all-time in Kansas history with 13 state titles. Southeast Kansas has gained quite the attention and reputation statewide of girls distance runners here recently and has been churning out state champions over the last few seasons with the likes of Logue, Wilks, Katren Reinbolt (Fort Scott '14), Kaylee Bogina (NE-Arma '15), and Jenny O'Bryan (St. Paul '16).

Wilks wasn't the only Dragon to land a title in Wichita either as senior Taylor Muff captured two (100 hurdles/300 hurdles) and senior Daeshia Turner won the triple jump. PHS girls took third place as a team in Class 5A.

Labette Bank and Sports in Kansas would like to congratulate McKenzie on an outstanding junior track and field season!
