The Girard Lady Trojan basketballt team, led by coach Brad Herlocker, made history last weekend as they captured their first ever state title in school history in any sport. For their effort, GHS has been named the Craw-Kan "Your Community Technology Partner" Team of the Week from Sports in Kansas from the Southeast Kansas area.
The Trojans won 54-48 last Saturday in Emporia in the 4A-II State Championship at White Auditorium. Girard finished 24-1 on the season. Four girls scored in double figures in the championship game including 15 from senior Calea Augustin, 14 from senior Ashley Ray, 13 from junior Sidney Crain, which included 8-of-8 clutch free throws, and 12 from senior Olivia Hanson. Free throws proved to be key for Girard as they made 19-of-23 in the title game, 15 which came from Augustin and Crain. Jeff West would also shoot well from the line as they hit 10-of-13, but the Trojans took advantage of more attempts. Girard won their opening round game against Topeka-Hayden (64-58) before knocking off Scott City (43-19) in the semis.
The seniors on this team (Augustin, Kelli Cuthbertson, Hanson, Lauren Franklin, Ray) have really help put this team on a state title level they havent seen before, and what's even more impressive is they started their career with a 7-14 record just three years ago as freshman. Last season Girard finished as the fourth place team in 4A-II and their only loss this year came to Washburn Rural, a ranked team in 6A with around 1,800 students, Girard has an enrollment of just 304 students. Regardless of classification, GHS was one of the top teams in all of Kansas this season.
