The Labette Bank Athlete of the Month for the Southeast Kansas area for their athletic performance over the month of February is Southeast-Cherokee High School senior Tyler Kester, who took 2nd place at the KSHSAA Class 3-2-1A State Wrestling Championship in the 120 pound weight division in Hays, Kansas on Saturday February 25, 2017.

Kester finished the season at an impressive 26-3 record and lost the state championship by a narrow margin (4-3, dec) to Norton's Ryan Johnson. Norton, one of the best overall programs in all of Kansas, would also win the team title in 3-2-1A at Hays.

While the Lancer Wrestling program is in only its 3rd year, Kester is a veteran wrestler who has spent several years with head coach Jason Wilderman. As a freshman, Kester took 4th in the State while wrestling for Pittsburg High. An injury sidelined him as a sophomore and he missed out on the opportunity to qualify for state. Last year, he took 4th place in Class 3-2-1A as a junior, giving the Southeast program it’s first State medal.

Labette Bank would like to congratulate Tyler on an outstanding wrestling season!

Special thanks to Chris Wilson of USD 247 for providing information and pictures.
