The Girard Trojans football team, led by head coach Leon Miller, have earned the Craw-Kan "Your Community Technology Partner" Team of the Week after the Trojans beat Iola (38-25) on the road for the 4A-II District III Title on Friday night.
It marked the third straight 4A-II district title for Leon Miller and the Trojans. Since 4A-II began back in 2014, the Trojans have only lost one district game, which came last week to Burlington, going 8-1 over the last three seasons. The Trojans got into the 4A-II playoffs on a three way (2-1) tie breaker by points. Iola, who also went 2-1, was district runner-up, as Burlington, who also went 2-1, was odd man out by points.
Girard used a big second half comeback in which they outscored the Mustangs 30-13 as they trailed 12-8 at the half. Senior quarterback Eric Wilson had a huge second half as he scored two rushing touchdowns and scored another through the air to Shane Redfern. After a big defensive stop by Girard, Wilson's 61-yard TD with 15 seconds left put the Trojans up 38-25. Redfern's interception on the last Iola possession with seconds remaining would seal the deal for the Trojans and put them back into the 4A-II playoffs for the third consecutive year.
Girard (4-5) will host Columbus (8-1), who took runner-up in their district as they lost to undefeated CNC Champ Frontenac, on Friday. Girard lost to Columbus 22-6 back in week three of the season. Girard is looking for their first playoff win since the Trojans got one when 4A was an entire classification in 2012 as they defeated Columbus 34-7 in opening round before falling to Chanute to end the 9-2 run that season.
