The Rainbow Communications Northeast Kansas Athlete of the Month for their achievements from the month of July is a pair of graduated seniors that participated in the 43rd annual Kansas Shrine Bowl in Emporia, Kansas on Saturday May 30th. Nemaha Central senior Winston Meyer and Troy senior Chris Winkel each took part in this years all-star football game that helps benefit Shriners Hospitals for Children.
Meyer, a senior offensive lineman, helped the East squad pile up 421 yards of offense in the game on the way to a 48-27 win over the East. Meyer was an All-3A pick as a senior for the Thunder. Meyer helped the Thunder to a 10-1 record in 2015 before losing to eventual state champion, Rossville, in the playoffs.
Winkel, a linebacker and wide receiver for Troy last fall, played receiver for the East in this years game. Winkel's high school coach, Derek Jasper, was also the 2-1A representative coach for the East squad. Winkel was a senior leader on the 2-1A state runner-up team in 2015. There wasn't a lot of passing in this years game but Winkel still picked up a catch on offense and made several key blocks as a receiver in the running game.
Congrats to the two Northeast Kansas athletes from Rainbow Communications for great representation of their school, their towns and the entire Northeast Kansas area for such a great cause.
