Hiawatha senior Emily Gartner has been named Rainbow Communications Athlete of the Month from the Northeast Kansas area for her play over the month of February.

Gartner, who has signed to play at Division I Missouri State next season, had a huge month with an average of 17.3 points, 10.9 rebounds and 4.2 blocks per game in February. Gartner shot 59 percent from the floor during the month. Her biggest game came against Perry-Lecompton where she scored 26 points, grabbed 10 boards, dished out five assists and had five blocks. 

Gartner, who stands 6-foot-4, wrapped up her career at Hiawatha as the all-time leader in points at 1,465, blocks and rebounds. Her 2015-2016 totals were 19.4 points per game, 11.7 rebounds per game and 4.4 blocks per game. In her last game as a Lady Red Hawk she had 27 points, 16 rebounds, 12 blocks and three assists in a loss to Sabetha. 

Hiawatha, coached by Brady Jasper, finished the season at 14-8.
