The St. Paul girls basketball team, led by head coach Doug Tuck, has been named the Craw-Kan "Your Community Technology Partner" Team of the Week from the Southeast Kansas area after their third place finish at the 1A-I state tournament in Dodge City this past weekend.
The Indians, who finished the season with only one loss, got a first round victory over Kinsley with a 43-28 victory on Thursday. That win put them into the 1A-I semifinals on Friday where they would lose to Waverly, 45-35. St. Paul would go on to the third place game where they defeated state power Hoxie, 31-30, and finish the season at an impressive 24-1. Hoxie, who had it's 107 game winning streak snapped earlier this season, has only lost three times since the beginning of the 107 streak back in December of 2011. It marked the second consecutive year the Indians finished in the top four in 1A-I, taking fourth place in 2015.
Senior Jordyn Tuck, who missed last years state tournament with injury, led all St. Paul scorers in the tournament with 40 total points over three games, while senior Josie Albertini had 32. Tuck ranked fourth overall in 1A-I tournament scoring, while Albertini was fifth. St. Paul was the top finishing team in the Southeast Kansas area as both Girard teams took fourth in 4A-II and Labette County girls finished fourth in 4A-I. Centralia would go on to beat Waverly, 54-36, to capture the 1A-I state tournament title as they finished 25-1 on the season.
