Pittsburg High lost in week seven of the football season last year to Blue Valley West. The Dragons regular season schedule has been criticized in recent years to go compete in their 5A district, a reason they have decided to leave the Southeast Kansas League in football at the end of this season, but that wasn't the case Friday in Overland Park. If there were any questions that Pittsburg was the real deal, that may have been answered on Friday as Pittsburg cruised to a 56-13 victory over Blue Valley West to open up district play in 2015.

The Dragons jumped out to 28-0 lead in the first quarter and it was never close after that as they led 42-6 at the half. PHS was led by three touchdowns by senior Sherrick Rogers, including two rushing touchdowns and a fumble recovery for touchdown. Quarterback Spencer Turnbull also added three touchdowns, one rushing and two passing. His two touchdowns went to junior receiver Elijah Harris for the first score of the game and tight end Trevor Kent in the second quarter. Chiantia Allen and Zack Roark also picked up defensive scores for PHS on a interception return and punt block return for touchdowns.

Pittsburg (7-0) will again be on the road this Friday as they take on Blue Valley Southwest in week eight of the football season. A Pittsburg win over Southwest and an Aquinas win over Blue Valley West will guarantee the Dragons a playoff spot in 5A and it would also set up a week nine district championship between Aquinas and PHS in Pittsburg.
