The Colgan Panthers football team has been named the Craw-Kan "Your Community Technology Partner" Team of the Week for their week five win over the Frontenac Raiders (28-21) on Friday night at Hutchinson Field in Pittsburg.
In a battle of two CNC league teams, the Panthers and Raiders were tied at 14 at the half in one of the hardest hitting high school football games this season. The game also featured one of the craziest plays of the season, while SMC was leading 21-14 with five minutes left in the fourth quarter on third down and long, Joe Batitori took the ball just six yards when the Raider defense had thought he was down, only it turned out he wasnt down. After rolling over on a Raider defender, he continued to run the ball 32 more yards for the score to really be the difference maker in the contest, making it 28-14 Colgan.
"Coach says to always play to the whistle and I never heard a whistle so I kept running." Battitori said.
The Raider offense didnt give up as they would drive the field to score on a seven yard pass from Brandon Mlekus to Dylan Flora, making it 28-21 Colgan. Colgan would pick up a first down on the following posession and run out all clock but 25 seconds. Frontenac completed two passes and got the ball to the 50 but wouldn't have enough time to continue the drive as the clock expired. The Smith Bowl series is now tied at 2-2 in the four years of its existence.
"It was a great game and atmosphere. We have a tough one this week with Columbus as they feature probably the best running back in Kansas." Senior Quarterback Ryan Cedeno said.
Colgan was led by Cedeno's 148 yards rushing with two touchdowns and another 64 through the air and a score, while Battitori added 91 rushing and a score. Andrew Stewart, who was also injured in the game, stepped up big with 51 yards on the ground. Garrett Normand had 50 yards recieving for the Panthers. Colgan will play 4A-II #1 Columbus this Thursday at Hutchinson field in Pittsburg.
