The Pittsburg High Purple Dragons have been named the Craw-Kan "Your Community Technology Partner" Team of the Week for their 37-0 victory over rival Fort Scott in week three of the football season.
The Dragons (3-0) built a 24-0 lead at the half before a power outage delayed the game early in the third quarter and lightning would delay it thirty more minutes. The weather seemed to be the only thing stopping the Dragons on Friday nights game in Fort Scott.
Pittsburg dominated the Tigers limiting them to zero yards rushing in the contest and outganing them 483-11 in total yards on the night. Senior fullback Dante Menghini led the rushing attack for the Dragons picking up 127 yards on 14 carries with one touchdown, he would also score on a fumble recovery. Senior tailback Sherrick Rogers had 125 yards, while senior quarterback Spencer Turnbull added 51 on the ground and a score. Turnbull also had 86 yards passing with a 38 yard touchdown pass to junior Elijah Harris. Nathan Neef also added a 25 yard field goal in the second quarter of the contest.
The defense, anchored by senior Will Mengarelli, was the real story for the Dragons on Friday. They limited Fort Scott to just 11 passing yards and zero yards rushing on the night. The Tigers only had one first down the entire game, compared to the 19 of the Pittsburg offense. The defense also picked up a score on a fumble caused by junior defensive end, Trevor Kent, for it to be returned 15 yards for score by senior defensive end Dylan Unterecker.
Pittsburg will resume play this Friday at home against SEK league opponent Chanute at 7 p.m.
