The Rainbow Communications June Athlete of the Month has been chosen as the entire Doniphan County (Post #55) Senior American Legion Baseball Team for their play over the past month.

Post 55 captured the NEKL Legion Tourney title on June 24th with a 3-0 win over Seneca, marking the second consecutive year they have won.

Doniphan's Nathan Gaarder, an all-state pitcher from Troy, was the winning pitcher as he tossed a seven inning shut-out in the championship game. Gaarder only allowed five hits in the game. He was also big at the plate by hitting a two-run home run, picking up two RBI's. Reid Greaser also homered in the contest, a solo shot in the third inning. Both home runs scored were the only runs in the contest as Seneca had a great pitchers outing from former Baileyville B&B all-state athlete, Dustin Rottinghaus, who gave up the only three runs off those home runs.

Doniphan didn't just have a great championship outing from its ace Gaarder. In semifinal action on June 8th, Post 55's Jeffrey Watts shined as he allowed zero hits in five innings pitched with 11 strikeouts in a 10-2 win (5 innings) over Hiawatha. He also went 2-of-3 from the plate. Also throw in Phoenix Keller, who was the winning pitcher in opening round action, tossing a five inning shut out over Frankfort (9-0 5 Inn.) on June 7th. He also homered in the game.

In addition to their second consecutive NEKL Legion Tourney Title, Doniphan County went 13-2 over the month of June. Post 55 is 18-3 on the season and went 7-3 in league play. They are scheduled to play Oskaloosa today (7/8) in a double-header at 6 & 8 p.m and look to continue a six-game winning streak. Legion Zone Tournaments begin on July 19th.
