Nathan Gaarder, senior of the Troy High School baseball team, has been named the Rainbow Communications Northeast Kansas Area April Athlete of the Month for his play over the month as selected by Sports in Kansas.
Gaarder, a 6-0 senior third baseman/pitcher, went off over April hitting five home runs and picking up 15 RBI. Not only did he hit for power, he also picked up 21 hits in 43 plate appearances for a batting average of .488.
Gaarder, also accomplished on the mound, went 5-0 over the month of April. In his five wins, he only allowed five runs, and struck out 31.
"I have to give my teammates a shoutout because the defense behind my pitching this season has been spectacular." Gaarder said.
Troy, led by head coach Roger Purdy, is currently 14-0 on the season and ranked second in 2-1A in the Kansas Association of Baseball Coaches Rankings.
"The season has been a lot of fun so far and hopefully we can make it back to Great Bend and win a couple more games than we did last year." Gaarder said.
