When it comes to high school softball and its history in the state of Kansas, there may not be a better all-time program than that of Bishop Carroll in Wichita. Carroll, led by head coach Steve Harshberger, has won the last four state titles in 5A and is ranked nationally in both the Maxpreps and USA today Top 25 polls. The Golden Eagles have a state record 12 all-time state titles dating back to 1978.

A big reason for that continued recent success is featuring one of the nations best players in senior Brittany Finney. The senior Oklahoma Sooner signee, who played her first two years at Maize High School before transferring to Carroll, has put up what may seem like made up numbers in 2015. In 16 games this year, she has hit a state leading .818 (2nd in the nation), picking up 36 hits in 44 at-bats, 10 home runs and 42 RBI. Her 31 career home runs are an all-time Kansas record, shattering the state record of 24 with just around a month of softball left to play to increase that record.

Not only is Finney solid with the bat, she is an outstanding pitcher. She is 8-0 in the circle striking out 68 over 34 innings pitched with a 0.21 ERA in 2015. Whether its hitting or pitching, her mentality is the same and that is to win.

"My mentality throughout the whole game is to win. No matter if I'm pitching or hitting I want my team to come out on top." Finney said

My mentality throughout the whole game is to win. No matter if I'm pitching or hitting I want my team to come out on top. It's a little different from hitting to pitching because as a pitcher my goal is to be completely dominant in order to make it as easy as possible for my team. As a hitter I want to do everything possible to help my team. If that means hitting for extra bases or bunting I'm going to do it.  - See more at: http://kansas-sports.com/ks/news/?id=5566&t=faces-in-ks-brittany-finney#sthash.3uwlDgqg.dpuf

She's not only successful on the playing field, she also gets in done in the classroom. Finney holds a 4.0 GPA and has been on the honor roll every year of her high school career.

Finney, however, isn't the only reason for Carrolls success. They may have arguably one of the best high school softball teams ever assembled in Kansas. Senior Lauren Buchannan, a Colorado State signee, is hitting .708 this season with six homers. Sophomore Madi Miller, a UT-Arlington commit, is hitting over .500 with seven home runs.

"This season has went great so far. It has definitely been one to remember up to this point. All the girls make practice and games so much fun." Finney said.

A lot of fun can be had when you are 16-0 and have outscored opponents 270-to-10 in 2015. The team has a ridiculous batting average of .626 this season, which leads the nation according to Maxpreps. Last years Carroll squad set the state record at .560, a mark they are well ahead of at this point.

"This team is solid all the way around. It can be intense with a target on our back, but knowing everyone wants to beat us makes us play that much harder." Finney said.

Finney, who was an all-american selection last season, will contend for national player of the year honors this season. When she picked Oklahoma, the 2013 College World Series National Champion, she felt right at home.

"The minute I stepped on campus at OU I fell in love. I knew there was no other place for me to be. I'd looked at other schools but the campus, the coaches and players, and really the entire atmosphere at OU made me feel like I was right at home." Finney said.

Oklahoma will have to wait on the arrival of Finney as she will look to lead the Golden Eagles to their fifth consecutive state title this May. We caught up Brittany below.

Q&A w/ Finney

How did you get involved with softball?

When I was a little girl visiting my cousins and uncle, they were playing with foam bats and balls in the yard and I decided to try to play with them. When we got home, my dad signed me up for Tee ball and I've been playing ever since.

How has the season went for you so far?

This season has been amazing! Definitely one to remember. All of the girls make practice and games so much fun.

You chose OU, what other schools did it come down to and why the Sooners?

The minute I stepped on campus at OU I fell in love. I knew there was no other place for me to be. I'd looked at other schools but the campus, the coaches and players, and really the entire atmosphere at OU made me feel like I was right at home.

What is it like to play on an elite high school softball team in Kansas that is going for their fifth straight state title?

It's a little intense because we all know we have a target on our back but at the same time the pressure makes it more fun. Knowing everyone is out to get us makes us want each and every game that much more.

What is it like to play for your coach?

Coach Harshburger is one of my favorite coaches. He knows so much about the game and he keeps practices interesting. He can be intense at times but only when we need a little motivation.

Who are some of the other players to look out for on BC?

Lauren Buchanan (Senior, committed to Colorado State University) is an amazing catcher and leader. I don't know what I'd do without her behind the plate.

Madi Miller (Sophomore, committed to UT Arlington) is a great hitter. She pushes me and gives me motivation to hit well.

Honestly this team is strong all the way around. Everyone is really solid in their positions and what they do.

Who will be some of your challengers this season?

We go into every game with the same mentality. Each and every game we go out looking for a win, no matter who we play. Our drive doesn't change even though the other team does. We are always looking to play our hardest.

Do you play on any club teams and about how many softball games a year do you play?

We play a lot haha. I play for the SoCal Explosion Denio out of Tustin California in the summers. We play about every weekend during the summer.

Do you have a different mentality when pitching than when batting, is it rare to be some dominant at both in the game of softball?

My mentality throughout the whole game is to win. No matter if I'm pitching or hitting I want my team to come out on top. It's a little different from hitting to pitching because as a pitcher my goal is to be completely dominant in order to make it as easy as possible for my team. As a hitter I want to do everything possible to help my team. If that means hitting for extra bases or bunting I'm going to do it.

What is your goal this season as an individual and as a team?

As a team our goal is to win our final game. Personally, I am looking to make an impact this year.

Do you play any other sports?

I played varsity volleyball for 3 years! (Freshman sophomore and senior year. I didn't play my junior year)

What do you do for fun when you arent playing sports?

I like coaching. I help with my youngest sisters team quite a bit. I love being able to teach the young girls everything I know. Their desires to learn make me so happy!
