The Girard boys basketball team, led by head coach Rod Wescott, had an impressive week (Feb. 16-22) of basketball with two big CNC league victories over Colgan and Riverton to earn Craw-Kan Team of the Week from the Southeast Kansas area. It marks the second time the Trojans have earned the honor, also earning it back on February 10th.
Girard opened last week with a 41-38 victory over league rival, St. Mary's Colgan, on Tuesday. The Trojans used a strong first half to their advantage as they led 24-18 at the break and held on for the three point victory despite being outscored 20-to-17 in the second half. Eric Wilson led the Trojans with 10 points, while Drew Davied chipped in nine.
On Friday's senior night, the Trojans knocked off one of the top teams in the area in Riverton, as they won a close one 56-53 to remain undefeated in CNC league play. Girard overcame a two point led by Riverton at the half and outscored the Rams 17-to-13 in the final quarter. Wilson again led the Trojans with 18, while Davied had 15 and Laike Damman added eight.
Girard (17-2, 6-0 CNC), ranked #3 in the latest KBCA poll in 4A-II, will play their final regular season game of the year on the road at Baxter Springs on Tuesday before sub-state play opens up next week at Iola. The Trojans, who will be heavily favored in their 4A-II substate, will be paired in a bracket with Anderson County, Iola, and Prairie View. Prairie View is the only team with a winning record at this point as the Buffaloes are 12-5 on the season.
