Coach of the Year
Phil Hobbs, Northeast-Arma
Hobbs led the Vikings to their first playoff appearance in 12 years and first winning season in 14 years as the Vikings went 6-4 in 2014. With a committed effort in the offseason, Hobbs has turned around the Northeast program, which has seen only three playoff appearances in the history of its program (1982, 2002, 2014).
Offensive Player of the Year
Alex Barnes, Pittsburg Sr. RB
Barnes, a Kansas State signee, rushed for 2,361 yards and 36 touchdowns to lead the Purple Dragons into the state playoffs for the first time in seven years. Barnes was also named the 5A player of the year from Sports in Kansas. He will go down as one of the best players of all-time in the history of the Southeast Kansas area.
Defensive Player of the Year
Taylor Watkins, Columbus Sr. LB
Watkins helped lead Columbus to its first ever state championship appearance (4A-II) in football in 2014. The senior all-state linebacker racked up 140 tackles on defense over his senior season. Shouldn't be a surprise with Watkins efforts on the football field this fall as he doubles as a state wrestling champion.
