Kansans in the Minors Update (6/16/14)

Tyler Baker, Shawnee Heights/Wichita State

Baker, a catcher, picked up two hits in his professional baseball debut on Saturday for the Class A Diamondbacks (Hillsboro Hops). Baker spent the last three seasons at Wichita State.

Travis Banwart – Goddard HS/Wichita State

Banwart is 4-2 on the season for the Triple A Indians (Columbus Clippers) with 61 K’s in 72.2 IP (3.58 ERA). Banwart has been in the minors for eight seasons now and if an MLB debut will ever come, one might think it will be soon.

Jordan Cooper – Shawnee Heights HS/Wichita State

Cooper is 5-1 (31 K’s/33.1 IP)  on the season for the Double A Cleveland Indians (Akron). Cooper is in his fifth year of professional ball after being selected in the ninth round of the 2010 draft.

Conner Crumbliss – Ark City HS/Emporia State

Crumbliss is hitting .218 on the season with 12 doubles for the Double A Oakland A’s (Midland). The former Emporia State All-American is in his sixth year of minor league baseball.

Jared Goedert – Concordia HS/Cloud County/KSU

Goedert is hitting .285  with 57 hits in 54 games with the Triple A Bluejays (Buffalo Bison). The former 4A all-state QB (2002) might be very close to making his MLB debut at some point in the near future. Brother, Connor, had an All-American season at Neosho County this spring and was drafted  in the 15th round by the Houston Astros.

Garrett Gould – Maize HS

Former second round pick out of Maize HS, Garrett Gould, is in his sixth season of pro ball. Gould is 1-5 on the season for the Double A Dodgers (Chatanoogs Lookouts) with a 6.87 ERA.

Cody Kukuk – Free State HS

Kukuk is 1-4 on the season for the Advanced A Red Sox (Salem). Kukuk was the 2010 Kansas Gatorade Player of the Year and was selected in the seventh round in 2011 by the Red Sox out of Lawrence-Free State HS.

Andy LaRoche - Fort Scott HS/Greyson CC

LaRoche has spent parts of five seasons in the majors, but is back in Triple A this season for Toronto (Buffalo Bison). LaRoche is hitting .220 with 18 hits in 25 games on the year. The 2002 Fort Scott grad has been in professional baseball since 2005 and is the younger brother of Nationals first baseman, Adam LaRoche. 

Tanner Poppe – Girard HS/KU

The Girard native tore it up in Advanced A ball this season with nine saves in the closer role.  Poppe became an all-star at the A+ level, but couldn’t play in game due to being moved up to Double A in late May.  He is currently playing for the Double A Brewers (Huntsville Stars). He has thrown in 26 combined innings (A+, AA) with 26 strikeouts in 2014. He was both a closer and starter while at KU. Poppe was an all-state basketball player in high school at Girard in 2009.

Robby Price – Free State HS/KU

Price is hitting .262 with two home runs and 12 RBIs on the season for Triple A Tampa Bay (Durham). Price, the son of KU coach Ritch Price, is in his fifth year of pro baseball.

Lee Ridenhour – SM West HS/KU/Johnson CC/Austin Peay

Ridenhour is 1-5 on the season for the Class A Advanced Phillies (Clearwater). Ridenhour who made three different stops in college was a former Gatorade Player of the Year in Kansas at Shawnee Mission West in 2008.

Jeff Soptic – SM East HS/Johnson County CC-

The former Lancer is 1-1 with a 5.03 ERA for the Advanced A Giants (San Jose) with  36 K’s in 34 IP. Soptic was a third round pick in the 2011 draft by the White Sox.

Matt Stalcup - Wellington HS/Allen CC/Pittsburg State

Stalcup has picked up one save this season for the Class A Oakland A's (Beloit). He has 25 strikeouts in 24 innings pitched on the season. The Wellington product was a ninth round pick out of Pittsburg State in 2013. 

Bubba Starling – Gardner Edgerton HS

Starling has struggled in 2014, but made decent strides throughout the season.  He has hit .184 on the season (3 HR / 30 RBI) for the Advanced A Royals (Wilmington). Three years ago, Starling was drafted as the fifth overall pick by the Royals in the first round of the 2011 Draft.

Nate Tenbrink – Olathe Northwest/Kansas State

Tenbrink is currently on the DL for the Triple A Mariners (Tacoma). The former KSU third baseman is in his seventh year of minor league baseball.

Logan Watkins - Goddard HS

Watkins made his MLB debut in 2013, but is back in Triple A for the Iowa Cubs this season. A 2008 grad of Goddard HS, he is hitting .291 with 1 HR and 19 RBI on the season. Watkins was a 21st round pick in the 2008 draft out of high school.

Collin Wiles – Blue Valley West HS

Wiles is 1-2 on the season with a 5.49 ERA for the Hickory Crawdads (Class A Rangers) in his third season of professional ball. Wiles was a first round pick by the Rangers in the 2012 MLB Draft out of Blue Valley West.
