Player of the Year honors were determined by a statewide media vote (Over 25 media members from all parts of the state) of people that work in media, radio, newspaper, television and finalized by Chet Kuplen of Sports in Kansas and Conor Nicholl of Sports in Kansas. Players of the Year and Finalists are eligible for a Sports in Kansas Patch. Stay on our feed over the next few days for updated coverage and all-state teams for both boys and girls.
2021 Sports in Kansas 1A-I Basketball Player of the Year
Jayden Garrison, Little River
Little River senior Jayden Garrison completed one of the more decorated careers of any recent Kansas athlete. Garrison was the 1A Boys’ Basketball Player of the Year last winter from Sports in Kansas. In the fall, Garrison was unanimous Sports in Kansas Eight-Man, Division I Offensive Player of the Year for Little River’s state championship team. Garrison became the first player in Kansas history to pass, rush and catch a touchdown in a state championship game.
This season, Garrison picked up 1A, Division I Player of the Year for the third-place Redskin squad. Garrison delivered 24.4 points, 4.4 rebounds, 2.5 steals and 2.2 assists per contest for the two-loss Redskins. He went over 2,000 career points this winter and finished with 2,082.
Garrison has offers from Barton County Community College, McPherson and Bethel College. Garrison was a consensus Top 5 player all classes for the 2020-21 basketball season, a highly rare achievement for a 1A player. Garrison was a second team all-state selection as a sophomore before back-to-back first team awards. He was also the Burrton tournament MVP this season and scored 28 points on 8 of 23 shooting in the state semifinal loss to Olpe.
