Over the last couple of months we have been highlighting teams in Western Kansas as the American Implement Team of the Week on their lost seasons this spring due to the Coronavirus. On this weeks edition we go to Dodge City, Kansas to catch up with their girls swimming team.

Coach Name & School: Kaitlyn Paul, Dodge City High School Swimming

Years at School: 4th year head coaching at DCHS

Records Last Year: 3rd at WAC and took an individual to state

Returning Starters:  Makenna Spencer, Harlie Wainscott, Adienne Asebedo, Ella Friess, Emily Palmer, April Lee, Alexa Gerdes, Laura Meir, Paige Mink

What has this entire cancellation of season been like for you?

The cancellation of the season has been a wide mix of emotions.  We had a big, young team and I was looking forward to watching each one of them get faster and grow as athletes.  Coaches and athletes are still mourning the loss of that opportunity. The largest emotion is sadness for the seniors who will not get to participate in their final season.

What were some key things you were really looking forward to in the 2020 season?

Over half of our team was freshman, or sophomores, which meant we were spending a lot of time at the beginning fixing technique and I was looking forward to how all of that would make them faster.  We were going to have great relays and were hoping to qualify for state, which would have been the first time going for all of these girls.

Who are some of those key players we should have looked out for this year?

Ashlynn Armstrong, Jenna Doussa, Adienne Asebedo, Laura Meir, Anne Reid, April Lee.

What now ?

We look forward to next season.  We will miss having a final season with Ella Friess and Isamar Mendoza, but I look forward to next year.  In the meantime, we will focus on maintaining our relationships with each other and finding a way to get in the pool before next season on our own.

As a teacher what has this been like with school?

It has been a huge learning curve.  Finding ways to communicate with students and help them stay positive when you are mourning a loss of things too can be difficult.  We all miss seeing our students and coworkers and little things like hearing their voices on the phone or seeing them on a video chat or even getting an email bring us joy, but also make us sad again that we can’t be with them in person.

Anything else to add?

We hope to be back next year ready to go and stronger than ever.
