The South Central High School boys made their first ever state appearance in the 1A state tournament this March in Dodge City only for it to be cancelled after they won their first round state tournament game over Lebo. South Central is the consolidation of Protection and Coldwater as the school made its first appearance as SC. The Timberwolves (21-5) were slated to play Stockton in the state semfinals before Covid-19 cancelled the 2020 KSHSAA State Basketball Tournaments. For many athletes it will always be the what if's of the 2020 season.

On that team was senior Xavier Frazier, a multiple sport all-state athlete, that was a 1A all-state pick for South Central this season in basketball. He averaged over 14 points per game and seven rebounds while also earning All-SPIAA honors. Also earning all-league honors and all-state honors were Owen Alexander and Chayde Snyder.

Not only did Frazier miss out on his final two basketball games and perhaps a state basketball championship, he also missed out on his senior track and field season. Frazier took fourth in the state in long jump in 1A last season. He had a PR of 22'2" and would have been one of the top small school jumpers in Kansas this season. He also earned all-state honors in the 300 hurdles and relays over his high school career.

Frazier also has a 3.3 GPA in the classroom and lists his favorite subject as shop class. We caught up with the senior multiple sport athlete below in the latest edition of Seniors in Kansas.

Q&A w/ Frazier

How did you get involved in sports?

My mom loves sports and got me started young playing all different sports and watching them too. I loved watching Kevin Durant play basketball when he played for the OKC Thunder in my younger days and he inspired me that even if you are a “big” you can have hidden things that some people may not know.

What were your goals this season?

Lead the South Central boys to their first ever state appearance and hoped to make it all the way and win the state championship.

What makes you such a force as an athlete?

I am quick and can jump, a lot of people at first thought I was just tall and not strong. But my teammates pushed me to be the best I can be at this level and program, and thats what helps me be a “Force”

What’s it like to play multiple sports?

I have done all sports throughout my life, starting of wirth soccer when i was just 3 years old then to basketball, track, football, and cross country.I love doing all of these sports, it keeps me busy throughout the year and is always exciting to see how far you can go or what you can accomplish each year.

Explain the heartbreak it was like to hear that the senior season in sports is cut short?

I at first really did not believe it. One of my friends told me about it and I thought he was joking. I then looked at twitter and saw that it was not a joke and was at a loss of words. Our basketball team has never made it this far. This was our year in my opinion, us 5 starters who had been playing ball with each other since 3rd grade pee wee. I think it was a horrible decision and think it should have gotten postponed not just cancelled. And seeing how my teammates reacted to this killed me just as much. Horrible way to end the senior year and I never would have guessed that this was how it was going to end. But there is only so much you can do in these situations and im trying to make the best of it.

What now?

Still up in the air. Hoping to continue my athletic career on the next level. I still had schools to visit before all of this happened.

What is your best sport?

My favorite is basketball but some might think I am better at track because I am versatile and can do several different events. I feel like that helps me be a better basketball player though.

What’s the atmosphere like to play for your school and town?

I love this small town and everyone in it, they have been supportive in every event that happens whether it is school related or not. We have a well traveling fan base and it is always awesome to have support no matter where you go to play.

Who were other key players on your team(s)?

Everyone, 90% of our team got playing time on varsity this year and that is what made us so powerful. We were very deep and always had backup when needed.

Favorite thing about sports you play?

Competition and support from family and community

What is it like to play for your coaches?

You always need coaches for sport! They help you get through way more than people would ever know. On AND off the court.

What interest are you seeing at the next level and what are your plans?

I would love to play basketball or run track at the next level, BUT what i want to major in makes it very difficult to decide cause there are very few schools that offer trade/tech options and sports.

Favorite thing to do when you aren’t playing sports?

Hang out with the boys and make memories, hunt, play video games with my little brother

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

10 years from now I see myself being involved with agriculture, living in the country with my wife and having kids.

Favorite subject in school, what type of student are you, GPA?

Favorite subject would be our “shop” class which we call AG Mechanics. I love welding, outside work and doing projects.I don't do very well sitting still in a classroom. 3.3 GPA

Who is your role model?

My parents, they help me get through so much and always push me to be the best I can be and thats how I want to be when I am older and am a parent. They are my backbone and it is nice always having help or guidance when needed.

Best place to eat in your town or the surrounding area?

Daves Pizza (Coldwater) and Don’s (Protection)

What would you say to the underclassmen out there right now reading this?

Always leave everything you have out on that court/field,  you NEVER know when it could be your last time out there.

One thing the average person wouldn’t know about you?

I am a small town kid who loves to farm and hunt!
