This week as part of our Craw-Kan Team of the Week in the Southeast Kansas Area we take a look at the Galena High School Softball Team  who had high expectations before the season being cancelled to the Cornavirus. Week by week we will highlight one team from the Southeast Kansas Area this spring at SIK. Galena returned two-time all-state selection Riley McNemar who has signed with Auburn out of the SEC and would've been a junior this season. Taehler Watkins also earned all-state selections a year ago for the Bulldogs. The Bulldogs are led by head coach Jacoby Martin, a Galena alum, that won a state high school baseball title as a senior all-state player in 2010. Martin led the Bulldogs to a 4A-II State Runner-Up Finish in 2018.

Coach Name & School: Head Coach Jacoby Martin, Galena High School

Years at School: 5 years at the school, 3rd year head coach

Records Last Year: 12-8

Returning Starters: Briley Krouse, Kendra Clifford, Taehler Watkins, Riley McNemar, Maddy Cole, Raylynn Downey

What has this entire cancellation of season been like for you?

The cancellation has been hard to take in. I look back at how much hard work the girls have put in over past several years, and for it to be ended so quickly was hard for anyone to be prepared for. I understand that the safety of the students is top priority, but it is still a tough pill to swallow for everyone. I really feel for those seniors who have put so much time and energy into the program, and worked so hard. It has been a very humbling experience, and has reminded me to never take anything for granted.

What were some key things you were really looking forward to in the 2020 season?

I was really looking forward to seeing the capabilities of our team. With us returning 6 starters it had us excited to make a run for a state title. We knew that it would be a tough road ahead but we were up for the challenge.

Who are some of those key players we should have looked out for this year?

Key players were: Briley Krouse, Kendra Clifford, Taehler Watkins, Riley McNemar, Maddy Cole, Raylynn Downey

What now?

Right now we are just trying to get through this and stay positive.

As a teacher what has this been like with school?

School has been a lot of online meetings and figuring out the best way that we can provide education to the students.

Anything else to add?

Thank you for all you do for the kids in Kansas.
