2020 Sports in Kansas All-Classes Player of the Year

2020 4A Sports in Kansas Boys Player of the Year

Tamar Bates, KC Piper, Jr.

Likely the two best players in all classes came from the 4A class this year with Bates and Sophomore of the Year honoree Mark Mitchell, both national level recruits that were set to square off in the 4A semifinals before cancellation of season by KSHSAA. KC Piper junior Tamar Bates helped the Pirates rank first in Class 4A all season and lead the state in scoring offense. Bates, the team captain, set school records with 490 points and 21.3 points per game. He also had 5.1 rebounds, four assists, 2.1 steals and a block a game. Bates also shot 58 percent from the field, 46 percent from 3-point range and 88 percent from the free throw line. Bates was an all-state selection last season for the 4A state champion Pirates along with his older brother.

Bates earned unanimous first team all-league, first team all-state K.C. Metro, and a DiRenna award finalist as a top player in Kansas City. Bates led Piper to a 22-1 record. Bishop Miege and Piper were set to play in the 4A state semifinals before the tournament was cancelled. Piper, Miege and Parsons – which was injury-plagued down the stretch and lost in the first round at state – were the top-three teams in 4A all winter. Bates, a junior, is 6-foot-4, 175 pounds and ranked No. 94 nationally. He has multiple offers, including Kansas, Kansas State, Missouri and Creighton.
