Player of the Year honors were determined by a statewide media vote (Over 25 media members from all parts of the state) of people that work in radio, newspaper, television and finalized by Chet Kuplen of Sports in Kansas and Conor Nicholl of Sports in Kansas. 2020 5A Sports in Kansas Boys Player of the Year

Xavier Bell, Andover Central, Sr.

Bell completed a phenomenal career in football and basketball. In football, Bell was a Shrine Bowl receiver and helped Andover Central to a 4A runner-up finish this fall. In basketball, Bell helped Andover Central to a state championship last year and a surprise state berth this winter. As a junior, Bell averaged 20.4 points and 6.7 rebounds a game. This winter, Bell delivered 24.6 points, 7.3 rebounds and two assists a contest. The 6-foot-3 Bell tallied double figures every contest, including 32 in a 61-59 sub-state championship game win versus Bishop Carroll. Jerome Washington, who averaged 13.3 points a game, hit the game-winner to defeat Carroll. BC was ranked first in 5A and undefeated and had defeated the Jaguars, 68-46, on Dec. 13.

In the state quarterfinals, Bell tallied 28 points in a 76-72 loss to Basehor-Linwood. For his career, Bell averaged 17.6 points and 5.4 rebounds a contest. He scored 1,710 career points. Bell has signed with NCAA Division I Drexel University, located in Philadelphia. Drexel is one of six Philly Division I schools, including Temple, St. Joseph’s, La Salle, Penn, and Villanova. Andover Central went 14-9. AC’s top-five scorers and seven of the top-eight were seniors. The seniors went to the state tournament every year.
