Player of the Years were determined by a statewide media vote (Over 25 media members from all parts of the state) of people that work in radio, newspaper, television and finalized by Chet Kuplen of Sports in Kansas and Conor Nicholl of Sports in Kansas. 2020 Girls 4A Sports in Kansas Girls Player of the Year

Payton Verhulst, Bishop Miege, Jr.

Payton Verhulst, one of the country’s top recruits for the 2021 class, repeated as 4A Player of the Year. Verhulst also earned Gatorade Player of the Year. Miege, the reigning Class 4A state champions, finished 21-2 and didn’t lose to an in-state squad. In the first round of state, Miege held off Chapman, 60-45. Payton and her sister, Ashton, paced the Stags all year. Ashton, a senior, has signed with Central Florida. The 6-foot Payton averaged 20 points, four assists and three blocks a contest. Payton was MVP of the Eastern Kansas League, and Ashton collected first team all-league honors and was also a SIK 4A Player of the Year finalist. Last season, Payton averaged 15.5 points, nine rebounds, five assists and three blocks a game. Payton’s college list includes the nation’s elite programs, including Missouri, Tennessee, Louisville, Connecticut, Notre Dame, Arizona State, Oregon, Oregon State and Stanford. She has narrowed her final five to Oregon, Oregon State, Tennessee, Louisville and Notre Dame. She is ranked as the No. 8 recruit in the 2021 class by ESPN. Payton served as captain of the USA Basketball 16-under team and earned MVP honors at the FIBA Americas U-16 championship.
