Republic County High School senior Eyann Zimmerman is one of the more unknown players in the state of Kansas.
It’s no secret that his high school struggled as a team last season as they went 0-9 in 2018. The good thing is that all starters return from a season of growing pains one year ago as they look for much improvement in 2019.
Zimmerman made headlines across the state last winter as he took second in 3-2-1A heavyweight wrestling. He also impressed at several camps and combines over the summer as an emerging lineman to watch in the small classes of Kansas.
The 6-foot-1, 270-pound, senior, offensive lineman and defensive lineman, has great strength and uses wrestling to his advantage in football. He went 39-5 last wrestling season and won a regional championship. He benches 345, squats 450 and cleans 290 pounds while running in the 5.1-5.2 range 40.
Zimmerman feels like this years team has a shot at improving off their winless record from one year ago and lists Kaleb Talkington, Hunter Hartner, Tate Lapo, and Jared Baxa as other key returnees on his team.
The Buffaloes, led by head coach Faron Kraft, open up the 2019 season at Minneappolis this Friday.
We caught up with Zimmerman below in the latest Q&A edition of Faces in Kansas.
Chet Kuplen, CEO/Founder of Sports in Kansas, on Zimmerman
“I’ve got the chance to meet Eyann a few times this summer at camps and combines. First off, he’s a very respectful kid and fun to talk to. That is one of the best things about what I do is getting to meet all these great kids across the state. In addition to all of that, he has a shot to be a very good football player this season. There are hidden players out there because sometimes a program will have some down years. He is a great wrestler too, losing to Hadley Panzer (KSU commit) of Lakin in the state finals last year. He may not project as a Division I recruit because of height but hes worth a look for all of the small schools in Kansas.”
