2019 5A Sports in Kansas Boys Player of the Year

Caleb Grill, Maize, Sr.

The 6-foot-3 Grill led Maize to the best season in boys’ basketball history with a third-place finish and 24-1 record in Class 5A. Grill, who has signed with South Dakota State basketball and was also a Top 11 selection as Maize’s quarterback in the fall, finished his career with 1,178 points, 173 made 3-pointers, 272 rebounds, 163 assists and 51 blocks.

Grill played for his father, Chris, and delivered 18.4 points, 4.6 rebounds, 3.4 assists, 2.4 steals and a block per game this year. Grill was a highly efficient shooter with 85 percent from the free throw line, 35 percent from 3-point range and 61 percent on 2s.

He thrice broke Maize’s single season school record for treys with 53 as a sophomore, 55 as a junior and 59 as a senior. Grill holds multiple Maize records, including career points (1,178), single game points (43), single season dunks (42) and all-time 3s made (173). Grill received more than a dozen Division I offers, including Texas Tech, Missouri State, Washington State, SMU, Air Force and Nebraska.
