Class 4A: Chanute wins host regional, moves to No. 1 in the classification

Class 4A has encountered big changes with traditional power and defending champion Arkansas City up to 5A. As well, 3-2-1A powers Marysville and Scott City – the defending 3-2-1A champion – are up to 4A. Bonner Springs, which was third in 4A last season, is also up to 5A, along with McPherson, which was seventh in 4A.

Additionally, 4A teams not known for wrestling success like Frontenac and Winfield are having breakthrough seasons. This will mark the sixth straight year that 4A will not have a repeat champion.

The differences have caused topsy-turvy team rankings and last weekend was no exception. Chanute bumped a spot from second to first after a regional crown. The Blue Comets opened the season No. 10. Class 4A state is at the Tony’s Pizza Events Center in Salina.

Chanute captured the 4A regional title with 205.5 points, 20 ahead of Winfield. Frontenac was third with 151.5 points, while Burlington took fourth with 150 points. Chanute qualified 10 for state, which tied Winfield and Marysville for the most among 4A teams.

However, Chanute does not have a single No. 1-ranked wrestler – and likely are not favored in any class. Scott City, which moved from No. 1 to No. 3, has the most elite talent with two No. 1 ranked wrestlers, a No. 2, and two Beavers ranked sixth.

Last year, Chanute was No. 11 in 4A and Marysville was tenth. It’s highly likely those two squads will finish much higher this weekend. Marysville bumped from third to second in the team rankings this week. Frontenac bumped two spots from sixth to fourth, while Tonganoxie is fifth.

Class 4A has six undefeated wrestlers with Tonganoxie 152-pound senior Korbin Riedel (38-0), Pratt 106-pound sophomore Devin Weber (37-0), Frontenac 138-pound senior Riley McDaniel (34-0), Osawatomie 113-pound freshman Chance Mitzner (32-0), Louisburg 220-pounder Austin Moore (12-0), and Chanute 285-pounder Qualin Powell (8-0).

Clements leads Chanute; Powell returns

At 106, Trent Clements (37-5) had a dominant run with a 4-0 record, all by falls in 28 seconds, 1:15, 1:34 and 2:56.

He remained third in the rankings behind Pratt sophomore Devon Weber and Tonganoxie freshman Grayson Sonntag.

At 113, Kolton Misener (35-8) fell in a high-profile match against Winfield’s Braden Ledford, 1-0. The pair flip-flopped from last week after the slight upset. Ledford (32-9) is now third, and Misener stands fourth.

At 132, Logan McDonald (33-8) took runner-up against Burlington’s Ethan Totty (34-3) in another slight upset. They flip-flopped spots with Totty now fourth and McDonald is fifth.

Parker Winder (42-6) was second at 138, along with Brady McDonald (33-11) at 145. They are ranked third and fourth, respectively.

At 285, Qualin Powell (8-0) dominated his weight class with wins by fall in 12 seconds, 1:50 and 30 seconds. Powell had missed most of the season with a knee injury. Powell will enter state unranked.

Braungardt wins for Winfield

In addition to Ledford, Winfield senior Owen Braungardt (33-3) won the title with a bye and then three wins by fall in 1:49, 1:27 and 1:43. He is the No. 1 ranked wrestler at 182.

Frontenac continues success

Riley McDaniel (34-0) won the title at 138, and Mason Jameson (32-5) captured the crown at 145 for the Raiders.

McDaniel had a bye, then won by technical fall, a fall in 2:28 and a 6-3 decision. Jameson had a bye and then three wins by fall in 1:04, 57 seconds and 4:19. Brendan Ishimura (26-2) captured the title at 152 pounds. He had a huge victory against Burlington’s Cael Johnson in sudden victory in the final.

Will Jameson (21-3) took second at 160 pounds, while Storm Niegsch (22-9) was the runner-up at 170. Dylan Ensch (19-10) captured the crown at 195 with a fall, a win in ultimate tiebreaker and a 4-1 decision.

McDaniel is ranked first at 138, Jameson is first at 145, and Ishimura is third at 152. Frontenac has never had an individual state wrestling champion, that could change this weekend. The program started just nine years ago under Keith Aikin who has done an incredible job at FHS. The highest finisher in school history is Brandon Mlekus who finished second in 2017.

Host Pratt takes own regional; beat No. 1 Scott City

Pratt won the title with 187.5 points, while Scott City was second with 164, 10 points ahead of Ulysses. The Greenbacks have been all over the top-10 in the team rankings this year and moved from tenth to fourth this week.

Devon Weber (37-0) stayed undefeated at 106. He had a bye and had wins by fall in 30 seconds, 3:47 and an 8-0 major decision.

Kaiser Pelland (33-11) took second at 113, Koda Dipman (32-9) was third at 120, and Dylan Cox (19-12) took second at 126.

At 152, Kadence Riner (37-3) captured the title with a bye, a fall in 5:45 and major decisions in 12-4 and 11-2. Jadon Koehler (29-8) took second at 160, and Caden Blankenship took the title at 182 with a 35-6 record.

For the Greenbacks, Weber is ranked first at 106, and Riner is second at 152.

Scott City, the defending 3-2-1A state champions and ranked first in 4A this winter, had titlists with 132-pound Justus McDaniel (25-3) and 138-pounder Kaden Wren (34-3). McDaniel had falls in 34 and 36 seconds and a 5-3 overtime victory. At 145, Theron Tucker (31-6) took second.

At 170, Wyatt Hayes (32-2) had a bye and then cruised with three wins by fall: 31 seconds, 61 seconds and 1:25. Kyle Sherwood (30-8) took second at 220.

SC has its elite talent with McDaniel and Hayes ranked first, Wren second, and Tucker and Sherwood both sixth.

Marysville wins regionals at Smoky Valley

Marysville won the Smoky Valley regional with 226.5 points, well ahead of runner-up Abilene with 168 points.

At 126, Ethan Crownover (33-6) captured the title with three wins by fall in 38 seconds, 5:26 and 5:14 and a 10-1 major decision. At 138, Jonny Crome (37-4) captured the title with a bye, technical fall, and two falls.

At 145, Joey Bockin (31-11) won the crown with a fall, a major decision and a 6-4 decision. Derek Roever (28-14) was second at 152, and Noah Ackerman (32-5) won at 160 with a bye and three falls.

The 170-pound final had a key match with Abilene’s Dakotah Whiteley and Marysville’s Storm Slupianek. Whiteley defeated Slupianek, 4-2.

Last week, Whiteley was fourth and moved to third this week. Slupianek came back into the rankings at fifth this week.

At 182, Matt Lindhorst (27-9) was runner-up, and Garron Champoux (36-2) was the 195-pound champion. Champoux had three wins by fall in 27 seconds, 1:13 and 3:01.

For Abilene, Will Stroda (39-3) captured the title at 113 with two falls by a combined 61 seconds and a 2-0 decision. He is ranked first at 113.
