Hugoton boys basketball have earned the American Implement Western Kansas Team of the Week. 

The Hugoton boys’ basketball team captured its own Blue and Red Classic tournament with a 69-65 victory against Perryton (Tex.). Senior Damian Lewis sunk 10 treys and tallied 39 points in the win. Hugoton (2-1) had lost to Perryton in the tournament’s first contest. The state mark for made 3s in a game is 13. Senior Carlos Montiel also tallied 14 points for Hugoton.

The Eagles fell 78-60 to Perryton before a 62-45 win versus Guymon prior to the four-point Perryton win. Hugoton trailed entering the fourth quarter before the Eagles outscored Perryton, 69-65. The matchups marked the first time Hugoton and Perryton had played since 2011.

Last year, Hugoton lost to Hooker (Okla.) in the Blue and Red final. Lewis delivered 10.7 points a game and shot 32 percent (40 of 125) from 3-point range last winter.

Entering this season, Lewis’ career best was 20 points. The Eagles were 10-11 last winter. Hugoton graduated leading scorer Mitchell Hamlin (14.2 points/game), but had all other points from non-seniors in 2017-18. Montiel and Lewis delivered double figures.
