Ethan Peterson was Smith Center’s leading rusher en route to the Redmen’s second straight state title. Last year, SC went 12-1 and captured the 2-1A title. This fall, against virtually the same teams, Smith Center finished 12-1 and won the 1A crown with a 59-0 title game victory against Olpe.

Peterson delivered 126 carries for 1,348 yards and 18 scores. He formed one-third of Smith Center’s excellent senior backfield. Colby Benoit had 113 carries for 1,280 yards and 24 TDs, and fullback Hesston Maxwell finished with 155 carries for 665 yards and eight scores. Also impressively, Peterson never fumbled all year. Smith Center had just five turnovers as a team.

Smith Center rushed for 331 yards a game and passed for 26 yards a contest. Defensively, Peterson recorded 62 tackles, five for loss. SC has 10 state titles, tying Lawrence for the most by a single program in state annals, according to Prep Power Index.
