The Craw-Kan "Your Community Technology Partner" Team of the Week from the Southeast Kansas area is the St. Mary's Colgan High School Panthers
The Panthers, led by second year head coach Shawn Seematter, have opened up the 2018 campaign with two very solid victories in going 2-0 to start the year. The varsity defense, led by defensive coordinator Brad Snow, is yet to allow a point. In fact the Panthers have only allowed six points over traditional CNC powers Columbus and Frontenac over the last two weeks.
The Panthers defeated Columbus on the road, 40-6 in week one, including building a 32-0 lead at the half. Last week against their rival Frontenac, also on the road, the Panthers won 14-0. It marks the second year in a row the Panthers have shutout their rival after winning 20-0 last year. The Panthers ended up 2-1A runner-up last season while Frontenac took second in 4A-II. The Panthers have outscored opponents 54-to-6 in the first two weeks.
The offense has been led by senior quarterback Cade Simmons who has 356 yards rushing and four rushing touchdowns in the first two weeks. Simmons also has 157 yards passing with two scores, despite rainy/muddy conditions in week two not allowing anyone in the Southeast Kansas area to throw the ball. Kash Marietta and Matthew Lomshek have also stepped up big in the backfield for the Pantehrs and have combined for over 200 yards. Luke Orender, Cal Marquardt and Garrett Bolinger have led the defense with each in double digit tackles after two weeks. Marquardt also has over 100 yards recieving and an interception, while Bolinger also leads the offensive line unit.
Colgan, now in the new Class 1A, basically 2-1A renamed from last year, will be back in action this week as they take on their final CNC opponent of the year in Baxter Springs on Thursday at home. It will be the Panthers first game at home this season. Unfortunately with the way schedules are in 2A and 3A, where all the other CNC teams lie besides the Panthers in 1A, the districts that begin in those classes in week four won't allow the Panthers to compete for a CNC title or play the likes of a Galena or Girard this season.
