For the second time in his career Gabe Garber picks up Rainbow Communications Northeast Kansas Athlete of the Month. While the month of August only had one football game fall in the month, we took Garber's last few months and both weeks of the 2018 football season to make it a little easier selection as the Sabetha junior has had quite the sophomore and junior year, so far. And his junior year has just began.
Garber, who picked off the pass last fall to win the 3A state championship in football as a sophomore was also the Sports in Kansas 3A baseball player of the year as the Bluejays won the 3A state baseball championship in May. He's followed that up nicely with two solid weeks as the Sabetha quarterback and linebacker in 2018. It's Garber's first season as the Bluejay quarterback. In two games he has 165 yards rushing with three touchdowns, along with another passing touchdowns, in limited time as Sabetha has combined to win the first two weeks 88-7 over Nemaha Central and Riverside. In week one he also had a team high 11 tackles on defense against rival Nemaha Central. Garber also had a nice showing at the Sports in Kansas Shrine Bowl Combine this summer.
It's not just Garber either for the loaded cast of players at Sabetha. Mason Engleken is back for a big senior seaoson and has 233 yards rushing on the year already with three scores. Joe Gruber also returns as a starter and one of the states best athletes, Elliott Strahm, is back to patrol both sides of the line. Strahm could be one of the best two-way lineman in the state this year and is the 3A state wrestling champ at 285-pounds last winter.
Head coach Garrett Michael and the Bluejays have opened the season 2-0 in 2018 and have a huge test this week against Big 7 opponent Perry Lecompton, who is 2-0 on the year. Sabetha is in the loaded new Class 3A this year, which means five teams that played for a state title last year are now in this new division (Holcomb, Frontenac, Andale, Sabetha, Marysville).
Rainbow Communications would like to congratulate Gabe on an outstanding start in 2018.
