Hooper Schroeder of Sedgwick High School is one of only five quarterbacks returning in the entire state of Kansas that passed for over 2,000 yards last season.

The 6’0”, 165-pound, senior returns for his senior year after passing for over 4,600 yards in his first three years of high school, including a 2,601 yard season last year with 30 touchdowns to just seven interceptions. His total was the second in all classifications of Kansas only behind Graham Mertz, the 6A state champion quarterback of BV North that has committed to Wisconsin. Schroeder has 55 career touchdown passes at Sedgwick High School entering this season.

Gone is senior Brayden Francis who had over 1,000 of those yards receiving a year ago but that’s where Hooper will look to connect with his junior brother, Kale, who had over 700 yards receiving as a sophomore last season. Kale along with Cauy Root will be the primary targets for Hooper this season.

Schroeder is also an exceptional student with a perfect 4.0 GPA. He plans to play at the NAIA level and perhaps in the KCAC at the next level.

“History is my favorite subject. I’ve always enjoyed learning and I enjoy school. I want to do good in school.” Schroeder said.

While he is great student, he’s also one of the top quarterbacks to watch in 1A this season, his team also has a shot to make a little noise. Sedgwick, led by head coach Jeff Werner, returns six starters on offense and six on defense from a squad that went 5-5 last season. They will have to replace Francis and Shrine Bowl selection Neal Bever, an all-state defensive back.

“We have a lot of talent. I think we can make a deep run through the bracket.” Schroeder said.

Sedgwick opens up the 2018 campaign this Friday against Whitewater-Remington on the road. We caught up with the outstanding student athlete below in the latest Q&A edition of Faces in Kansas.

How did you get involved in football?

I started in 5Th grade when my dad became the junior football coach.

What are your goals this season?

As a team I want to go as far as we can this year, and personally I want to have a better year than last year and be All-State.

Do you guys have a shot to make a run this year?

We have a lot of talent, and predicting what the bracket might look like this year I think we have a very good shot of making a deep run.

What makes you such a force as a player?

I think the offense we run really helps me as a player. We spread the ball around to everyone, and a lot of the time I just have to get it to one of our playmakers and they do the rest.

What’s the atmosphere like to play football on Friday night for your school and town?

It’s a very special atmosphere on Friday nights. I play 2 other sports and the feeling you get from playing football is unmatched by the other sports. It is extremely fun to play football at Sedgwick.

For anyone that hasn’t seen one of your games, why come to one?

Almost all of our games are very high scoring and we throw the ball a lot. To me this makes the games very enjoyable to watch.

Who are other key players on your team?

My brother Kale Schroeder, and Cauy Root are the top 2 returning receivers. Colton Smith plays RB and LB, and then the whole offensive line, because they are really the ones who make our offense go.

Favorite thing about football?

I love how you can play with so much emotion in football, and our coach really lets us go out and play like that.

Do you play any other sports, tell us about that?

I play basketball and baseball. I go to a small school so a lot of people play multiple sports and it’s one of the things I love about Sedgwick.

What is it like to play for your coach?

I love playing for Coach Werner, he lets us go out and play with a lot of emotion and is very good at getting people to play their best.

What did you and the team do in the off-season to become this summer?

We started a new lifting program, had team camp, and conditioning.

What interest are you seeing at the next level and what are your plans?

I am very interested in playing football at the next level, and I plan on going to a KCAC school.

Favorite thing to do when you aren’t playing sports?

Playing Xbox and going out to eat with my friends.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

I want to stay involved with football and try to be a coach.

Favorite subject in school, what type of student are you, GPA?

History is my favorite subject for sure. I’ve always enjoyed learning and have wanted to do good in school. I have a 4.0 GPA.

Who is your role model?

My football role model is Tom Brady, I’m a Patriots fan and what he has been able to accomplish is pretty amazing. My role model in life is my grandpa, ever since I was little he has supported me in everything.

Best place to eat in your town or the surrounding area?

Cy’s is a very popular place in Sedgwick, but Kilroy’s is a pizza place and it is my favorite.

One thing the average person wouldn’t know about you?

I enjoy reading and do it all the time.
