The Labette Bank Athlete of the Month from the Southeast Kansas coverage area is Pittsburg High School senior track and field athlete, McKenzie Wilks.
Wilks made her mark in Kansas high school track and field history last Friday and Saturday by capping off her career with three state titles over the weekend and six overall in her career. Wilks also set the 34 year old 5A state meet record in the 1600 with a 4:56.29 on Saturday afternoon in Wichita. On Friday night, Wilks won her first title of the weekend of 10:50.19. She finished out her individual high school running career with a state title in the 800 meters on Saturday evening with her all-time best of 2:14.04. She was also a part of the 4x400 relay that took fourth in the last race of Saturday evening.
Wilks will go down as one of the best of all-time in Kansas history as her 1600 time ranks 14th all-time in Kansas history in all classes. Crawford County has had quite the fleet of distance runners in recent memory that included Cailie Logue last year at Girard (4A), who set three 4A state meet records in her career and is now at Iowa State.
